September 11, 2001........
I was at work at the Heidelberg Civilian Personnel Advisory Center for the US Army (I had just started working there 10 days prior) when one of my collegues came to my office and told me to get on CNN news immediatly...the Towers had been hit !!!!! We were all watching the live news feed in disbelief and shock and after a short while we had armed soldiers around our building and we were told to leave the building and go directly home, especially if we were americans or spouses of US troops.
Back then I was taking the public bus from the train station to PHV, which is where T and I lived on our first tour. The german bus used to come on to the american bases but that stopped that day. I remember being on the bus, in a huge line of other vehicles trying to get on PHV when the bus driver received notice via radio that no none-US vehicles were allowed on any of the bases effective immediatly and if he had any americans on the bus that wanted to get on PHV they would have to get off the bus and walk the rest of the way. I also remember this very nice German man getting up and trying to explain the situation in the little english he knew to the americans on the bus....I was simply touched! Walking the rest of the way towards PHV passing the long, long line of cars with all those people will be forever imbedded in my mind. Just like me, they were all so scared and confused and I just wanted to get home and be with my family. As a military spouse I knew that my life and the life of everybody in this world would be different....effective September 11, 2001.
God bless all the men and women out there fighting and watching out for us!!!!!
