9/11

someone asked what I did on this day eight years ago, this is what I have to say.

What I was doing on September 11 2001?
I was at Heidelberg (Germany) Army hospital escorting a soldier who was separating for discipline issues. He shouted SSG Carrier you need to see this; a plane just hit one of the buildings in New York. I said to the soldier Wow Kennedy Airport must be messing up. As I watch the TV I notice a plane from the back ground of the trade towers as it slams into the other tower. “Man I guess we are going to war now!”
Being forward deployed in Germany our lives as soldiers jumped into effect as broadcast over armed forces network told all soldiers report to their duty locations. We drew weapons ammo and started to guard our post, whether it where mounted our dismounted patrols around the post. I would say 98% of the force was in defensive positions to guard property of the government as well as family members that lived abroad. Guard duty became a 24 hour operation throughout Germany.

What was I doing?

I was on the Autobahn coming down from Stuttgart back to Heidelberg, when I heard the radio news that a plane hit one of the towers. At this time in german news stations no one even considered that terrorists hijacked planes to crash them into buildings. Everybody thought it was an accident with something little like a Cessna. In the afternoon news informed that another plane hit the second tower. Some time later, I was sitting in a Café, radio said that one tower collapsed, so someone decided to turn on TV. We couldn't even believe what we saw.
In the same night I had to pick up Tom from Frankfurt Airport. He returned from his vacation in Turkey. I called him to tell him what was going on. They had no TV at the Airport in Turkey. On my way to Frankfurt I passed HD Headquarters. Everything was closed down and protected by armed soldiers. Same in Frankfurt, they closed down the Airport. Tom's flight was one of the last to come in. The Airport was crowded by TV stations and news people. It took me a damn long while to pick up Tom and to get back home.
I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war, if you could tell me something worth fighting for......

OK what I doing on this day....

At this time I work in a Car Hifi Shop in Bensheim and we plan to open a new store in Darmstadt...we are on the A5 on the way to the new opened shop in DA and Ilke call me and tell me the news can't belive it. At this time my boss was planing his emigration to Florida and his flight was planed for the next day. Nobody know what happend at this moment...we driving back to our old Shop in Bensheim where we have some TV's...
As we see the pics of the WTC the world is standing still for me .... we can't belive what we say......one of my first thoughts "the world is going into War now"...
Since this day nothing is as before....the barracks in Darmstadt got fances around the areal...Heavily armed soldiers keep a close watch....No BBQ's at the green of the barracks, no Baseball watching in the barracks...

This day changes a lot, changes the world.

I never forget this year!!!

September 11, 2001........

I was at work at the Heidelberg Civilian Personnel Advisory Center for the US Army (I had just started working there 10 days prior) when one of my collegues came to my office and told me to get on CNN news immediatly...the Towers had been hit !!!!! We were all watching the live news feed in disbelief and shock and after a short while we had armed soldiers around our building and we were told to leave the building and go directly home, especially if we were americans or spouses of US troops.

Back then I was taking the public bus from the train station to PHV, which is where T and I lived on our first tour. The german bus used to come on to the american bases but that stopped that day. I remember being on the bus, in a huge line of other vehicles trying to get on PHV when the bus driver received notice via radio that no none-US vehicles were allowed on any of the bases effective immediatly and if he had any americans on the bus that wanted to get on PHV they would have to get off the bus and walk the rest of the way. I also remember this very nice German man getting up and trying to explain the situation in the little english he knew to the americans on the bus....I was simply touched! Walking the rest of the way towards PHV passing the long, long line of cars with all those people will be forever imbedded in my mind. Just like me, they were all so scared and confused and I just wanted to get home and be with my family. As a military spouse I knew that my life and the life of everybody in this world would be different....effective September 11, 2001.

God bless all the men and women out there fighting and watching out for us!!!!!
